Good psychotherapy is more than just talk. Don’t get me wrong: Your words and stories are vitally important, and they make up 100% of the content of what we talk about together. But what goes on for you as you speak can be equally important.
I am referring to: 1) Your changing thoughts, feelings and sensations as you speak; and 2) The language of your body that accompanies your words. These interior and exterior events can be so automatic that you may not even notice them. In our work together, we’ll widen your scope of awareness by paying a gentle and respectful attention to their presence.
To assist you in this, I will suggest small, creative experiments to try during the session. These experiments are designed to engage the thoughts, feelings, sensations, and behaviors that are the unaware parts of yourself. These are the things you’ll need to embrace or let go in order to move closer to the life you want.
This increased attention and experimentation extends and expands your repertoire of responses to the world. You will develop a clearer sense of how you want to live, and greater confidence that you can do so on your own terms. At the same time, difficulties you may have with mood and anxiety become much more manageable.
